For all beginners in hand embroidery…

Are you starting out with hand embroidery but encountering some difficulties? Don't panic, it's perfectly normal! Like anything done by hand, hand embroidery requires a little time, patience, and practice before you master it.
For you, young embroiderer or budding embroiderer, with my team Studio Francosse, we have established the 11 commandments of embroidery: those we wish we had known when we started hand embroidery!
But before you learn the 11 commandments, you need to learn how to embroider! We therefore advise you to first read our blog article entitled “how to learn hand embroidery?”.
The 11 Commandments of Embroidery
1. YOU WILL BUY YOUR EQUIPMENT
Gather your embroidery supplies: your base (a square of fabric, a garment, or even a dish towel), your embroidery hoop, your embroidery threads, your embroidery needles, and a pair of scissors!
2. YOU WILL MAKE A DRAWING
Before embroidering, draw on your surface using a water-soluble marker or a Frixion pen, that way you will only have to follow the lines of your drawing!
3. YOU WILL USE A DRUM
Place your embroidery fabric in the hoop. The part with the screw should be in front of your fabric, and the other part behind; fit them together and tighten if necessary with the screw (which should always be at the top).
4. YOU WILL DISCOVER THE SECRET OF THE THREADS
Did you know that one thread contains 6 strands? For each stitch, you'll need a different number of strands. Watch the video to learn how to separate them.
5. IT WILL GO THROUGH THE EYES OF THE NEEDLE
Don't panic at the thought of threading the needle. Licking the thread and/or cutting it with scissors can greatly help!
6. YOU WILL BEGIN WITH YOUR POINT
A stitch is always started by inserting the needle from the underside of the fabric. Tie a knot before starting a stitch, and again after finishing it. And most importantly, trim the excess thread behind your embroidery as you go.
7. REGULAR YOU WILL BE
My craziest secret: consistency! To get a beautiful embroidery, make stitches of the same size (about 2 mm). To embroider beautiful curves, you can even make them smaller.
8. YOU WILL TAKE MY ADVICE
If you're having trouble with the chain stitch, use a backstitch, it's easier!
9. YOU WILL CORRECT YOUR MISTAKES
Did you miss a point? It's best to undo it right away and redo it, because you won't be able to go back later.

10. You will untie knots
Don't panic at the sight of a knot; you can try to untie it gently with the needle (it's often just a "false" knot). If that doesn't work, cut the thread, tie a knot, and start a new stitch.
11. YOU WILL FINISH YOUR EMBROIDERY
Finally, rinse your embroidery with water (if you used a water-soluble marker) or iron or steam (if you used a Frixion pen) to make the design.
And there you have it! I hope these 11 commandments of hand embroidery will help you with your next projects!
